Definition of Mass Communication

Definition of Mass Communication - Mass communication has various definitions put forward to experts. The simplest definition proposed by Bittner (in Grace, 2003:188), namely "messages communicated through mass media on a large number of people." Bittner emphasized the notion of communication which he presented to the media as a tool to convey a message. Thus, any messages that are communicated through the mass media are included in mass communication.

A more detailed definition put forward by other communication experts, namely Gebner. According Gebner "mass communication is based on the production and distribution technologies and institutions from the continuous flow of messages and the most widely owned by people in industrial societies" (Grace, 2003:188).

From these definitions can be drawn that the mass communication that produces a product of communication messages. The product is distributed, is distributed to a wide audience continuously within a fixed time, eg daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly. The process of producing the message can not be done individually, but must be by agency, and requires a specific technology, so that mass communication will be mostly done by industrial society.

Meanwhile Meletzke (in Grace, 2003:188) defines the mass communication as "any form of communication that made the statement publicly through the media dissemination of technical indirectly in public and one-way spread." Meletzke described the communication as a one-way messages. The term spread indicates that the communicant as the recipient of a message can not be in one place, but scattered in various places.

According to some experts these definitions, then Jalaluddin Rakhmat (2001:189) defines as a mass communication: "Communication is defined as a type of mass communication addressed to a number of audience dispersed, heterogeneous, and anonymous via print or electronic media so that the same message can be accepted simultaneously and for a moment. "

So, in principle, communication is the information disseminated to the public through a medium (media) that can reach a broad audience simultaneously. Whatever type of information, when disseminated through the mass media then it is included in the form of mass communication.
